We learn from the classics and with our own hands make out an aquarium from which the spirit will capture both friends and inhabitants of the underwater kingdom.
To create a perspective, a large number of different-scale plants, contrasting in color and having different sizes of stems and leaves, are used in the design of the Dutch aquarium
There are fashionable trends in the design of aquariums, and among them there are several directions that have become classics of aquarium design. The cultural traditions of Japan, Holland and the New World were miraculously embodied in unexpectedly spectacular water landscapes. Looking at these works, you understand that it is impossible to repeat such beauty, but when you look closely, you discover techniques, details, patterns that help a beginner in designing an aquarium to create his first masterpiece by himself.
For aquarium design, even a special term appeared – aquascape. So, we learn from the classics and with our own hands make out an aquarium, from which the spirit will capture both friends and inhabitants of the underwater kingdom.
The deep perspective and naive realism of the landscape migrated from the paintings of old Dutch artists to the world of aquarium art.
To create a perspective, when designing a Dutch aquarium, a large number of different-scale plants are used, contrasting in color and having different sizes of stems and leaves. High lush plants with filiform or very small leaves are placed in the background. Stem shoots with larger foliage – on average. The lowest algae bushes and those that mimic the grass – on the front. Due to this reception, a feeling of a deep multi-tiered landscape is created.
For landing, light and dark green, brown, yellowish and red algae are used. On average, each plant has 10 cm2 of bottom – it is a dense planting, but it leaves plants able to develop well and form in the aquarium that abundant green landscape that the Netherlands is famous for. A passing small, but bright fish, give it the sharpness of surrealism.
The illumination is achieved by the effect of oblique sunlight, which flashes a piece of green thickets. Dutch aquarium needs constant care:
- the supply of carbon dioxide;
- soil fertilization;
- pruning of sprouting algae;
- careful selection and regulation of the number of inhabitants.
Such an aquarium is certainly suitable for a classic interior in modern reading, with elements of modern chic. It will also be good in an ecotyle atmosphere with a touch of romance wandering.
Apparently out of sympathy for the newcomers, for whom the design of an aquarium in the Dutch style with their own hands is an impossible task, the masters of the aquascape canonized the so-called collection style. Its principle boils down to the following – if you use all available types of algae (from 15 or more), then over time they expand, crowd each other, and create the effect of a neglected English garden. In practice, this happens, provided that the aquarium is large enough, from 50 liters. To the undersea landscape was not dull, combine tall and short stature, contrasting colors.
This simple design is surprisingly versatile – it fits perfectly into the ethnos and the classic, Mediterranean, Scandinavian interior.
Pseudo-natural style implies the re-creation of picturesque landscapes under the water. For this, when decorating an aquarium, artificial scenery simulating mountains, gorges, rivers, architectural objects is used. The task of the creator of the installation is to achieve an impression of reality and at the same time a fantastic “picture.”
There are special pumps for playing waterfalls under water – they do not blow out water, but fine white sand, which, flowing along the slope of the stone, gives the impression of falling jets. For classics, art nouveau or ardeco, the pseudo-natural design of the aquarium may turn out to be foreign, but pop art, naive country, safari, marine design of an apartment will easily take such a fancy aquascape.
There are interiors in which the aquarium is stubbornly discordant with the overall design. These include industrial loft and high-tech, as well as sophisticated Japanese style. It was from Japan that the amazing principles of aqua-design came, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of the Iwagumi – the art of creating an empty space filled with philosophy.
Mild, but expressive means, using soil, sand, carpet and several stones, you can turn a Japanese aquarium into the universe. A flock of small fishes seems to be flying somewhere in infinity, over a desolate planet.
The stones play the main role in the Japanese aquarium. They can be three or four – one big (main), one or two additional and one very small, “sacrificial”. To execute by themselves the design of such an aquarium will be helped by mock-ups of stones, designed specially for Japanese compositions.
In continuation of the Japanese minimalist traditions, amateurs of the aquascape began to create rocky compositions free from canons with small islands of undersized carpet algae. Restrained, elegant design is also suitable for an aquarium with small fish.
The bright world of animation from Disney films about Nemo and Mermaid enriched the aquarium with new ideas. It has become fashionable to copy scenes from cartoons, where the inhabitants become living characters of a fairy tale. It is difficult to come up with a more successful variant of aquarium design for a children’s room.
On sale are offered grottos, shells, corals, castles and sunken treasures of synthetic materials. The neon colors and bizarre outlines of the underwater world are supplemented with rare blotches of algae. For this style it is necessary to select the most intricate shells, bright species of fish and crabs.
Accessories for a landscape aquarium can be bought or found for a walk, but in any case they must be properly processed before being placed in water. An exception is the decorative film.to content↑
The film is glued to the outside of the back wall, so it does not need to be trained and tested for safety. Created by a professional aquarium background designer helps to create a background, perspective, enrich the landscape with details. Ideally, underwater aquarium design smoothly flows into the background, and when this effect is achieved, the result is impressive.
The stickers use the Disney stories, there are also series in Japanese and Dutch style – to help those who first make out the aquarium with their own hands. To stickers, as a rule, models of stones and other elements of the underwater world are offered.
You can also use a voluminous background that is attached to the wall from the inside, but you need to know what dangers it hides for small inhabitants. If the plastic background is peeled off the wall of the aquarium – and this happens, sooner or later, the fry and the small fishes, swim in the gap, will not be able to get out there independently.to content↑
Models of stones and pearls
Stones, grottos, treasure chests and corals are all made from synthetic resins and require antiseptic treatment before use, according to the instructions. The finished decor is fixed on the bottom and walls of the aquarium with silicone glue, forming the basis of the future composition. Subsequently, it is supplemented by plants and inhabited by inhabitants.to content↑
Barkers and branches are a fashionable element of decor. They mimic the roots of plants, trunks of fantastic underwater trees, slopes of gorges. Usually they are used in the design of the aquarium not in themselves, but as a platform for breeding moss. The moss is tied to a snag with a fishing line or a conventional cotton thread, and it grows, forming, according to the aquarist’s conception, the crown of a tree or thickets in mysterious caves.
Buying driftwood before use it is necessary to boil for two hours. Selecting suitable samples in the forest, it should be remembered that resinous and tanning wood (coniferous, oak) is not suitable, it will brighten up and acidify the water. We need dead old roots and branches that do not emit juice and tar.
They are boiled for a long time, in several waters, until the water ceases to be painted. Then boil in salt water and again soak in fresh – all in order that the wooden decor does not soften the water. For the aquarium, whitish snags, run by waves and thrown ashore of the sea or rivers, are safer. As a rule, they have expressive streamlined shapes. But they must be strong enough, not rotten.
In order for the wooden elements not to float, the composition must be fixed with silicone glue.to content↑
Natural Stones for the Aquarium
Natural minerals, of course, are more expressive than a dummy, but not every stone is suitable for an aquarium. To begin with, the stone found should be well rinsed and boiled, and then drip the vinegar. If vinegar hiss, then, in the mineral there is lime, and this harms both plants and fish. Pay attention should be to granite, basalt, quartz, sandstone, and even better – to buy ready-made stone elements for the aquarium in a specialized store.
Immediately before laying in a vessel stones are cleaned with a rigid brush and scalded with boiling water. When forming a composition, it is necessary to take into account the preferences of the inhabitants. Shrimp looking for small caves, they should be a lot, “to choose.” Tsiklidy oblyubuyut grottoe, composed of sandstone – the stones must be bonded with silicone. Otherwise large specimens will destroy their own shelter.to content↑
Selection of the soil
If you first took up the design of the aquarium and decided to do everything yourself, then the ground is better to take it ready. Too many factors that need to be considered when choosing it – composition, size, uniformity of fractions, color – everything matters. At purchase necessarily inform the adviser, what plants and small fishes will live in an aquarium.
The whole decor, which was discussed above, does not make any sense, if the aquarium does not have plants, fish and small fauna. It is in order for them to be comfortable, decorate and fill the tanks in a certain order.
- Acquire everything you need.
- Preparing snags and stones is the longest procedure.
- Edit the models.
- Install the underwater part of the equipment.
- Create a composition from roots, driftwood and plaster casts.
- Fall asleep and level the soil.
- Install, if necessary, a pump to simulate a waterfall.
- Moisten the soil and plant the plants. Add some water.
- Fix the yavan moss on the bottom tier of snags to the thread / line. Add water again. Repeat until the completion of vertical landscaping.
- Fill the aquarium with water. Connect the equipment.
It is important from the very beginning to ensure the supply of carbon dioxide in the aquarium, which contributes to the development of algae and improves their survival. When the plants in the aquarium take root, you can launch fish, crayfish and other inhabitants into it.
Nothing can give a novice aquarist more joy than a successfully designed by himself aquarium. The possibilities for this are more than enough, go for it!
